Sundrop Station's Station
Manager
Okay, this page is really About the Designer, but since
she's also the webmaster for Sundrop Station, the title "Station Manager"
seems appropriate! Sandy Harris, the designer of all of those cute
little wee folk, lives in the small town of Cottage Grove, OR, where she
grew up. She did manage to "escape" her hometown for awhile, attending
college for four years southwest of Portland, then living in Eugene, in
the city, for nearly 15 years. But she's a country gal at heart and
eventually moved back to her hometown where it would be easier to keep
an eye on her parents, who still live in the same house Sandy grew up in.
When Sandy first began Sundrop Designs, she was also operating a child
care business. Last year, it bacame quite evident that she could
no longer do both businesses and succeed at either, so last June she closed
the child care business, moved everything (including her 9 cats and one
dog) out to her parents' house in the country proper, and put her own house
up for rent (to pay the bills). It only took a month to realize that
living at her parents' house and running a business there was not going to
work! After finding renters willing to rent the main house only, Sandy
quickly turned her old child care room (what was once a single-car garage),
into a studio where she, dog Scruffy and cat Charley spent the winter. Now
that summer is here, Charley lives full-time out at Sandy's parents' with
the other 8 cats, and Sandy & Scruffy sort of live in both places (a
few days in town, a few days in the country). Scruffy would prefer
living in the country full-time, but Sandy would never get any work done
if they did. Sandy calls her parents' place Blackberry Hill because it's
mostly a hill and most of that hill is covered with blackberry vines. You
can read more about their adventures in the country in the
Tales from Blackberry Hill
section.
2005 Update: Last winter, living without a cat around the place proved
to be an open house invitation for mice, so Sandy and Scruffy adopted a kitten
to live in town with them. Chloe was taught to hunt mice by a border
collie, so Sandy was a bit skeptical at first, but Chloe has proved herself
to be a good mouser. This spring, Emma (one of the outdoor cats) became
very ill and came to live at the little studio, too. She and Chloe
seem to be adjusting to each other quite well, so Emma just might stay at
the studio long term.
