THINK OUT OF THE BLOCK!
A Wee Tutorial By Margo Rose

There are several questions that I'm always asked about both the Wee Village & Olde Towne.  One is: What does YOUR quilt look like!  Another is:  How should I put it together!  and the last is:  What size will it be?
I've come up with only one satisfactory answer that answers all three!

"Think Out Of The Block!"
Projects made with the Wee Village & Olde Town Blocks are intended to be YOUR vision of what a town for Wee Folk should look like.  There are no rules, no boundaries -- no set format which is why I don't show my own version of the blocks -- I feel quilters shouldn't have a preconcieved notion of how these Wee Towns should look like.
Thinking Out Of The Block isn't a technique but rather a concept that seems to surprise, challenge and some times baffle quilters but it's very simple and can be applied to ANY quilting project!

Step One:  First decide where you are going to have your Wee Village or Olde Towne Project!  Look for places that other quilters might have missed or find one that suits your personality and home.  Even if you live in an apartment in the middle of a city, you can create a "magical" forest by putting Wee Houses and Folk in corners behind end tables, along baseboards, way up in the corner of a ceiling!  Hide them behind your cannisters, under towel racks -- any where you think one of the Wee Folk might feel safe!

Step Two:  Decide how you are going to create your Wee Village or Olde Towne!  You could do it as a whole cloth project or as blocks but the possibilities don't end there!  How about extending the motifs off the backing? and then sewing the section to another fabric and turning it inside out before quilting?  How about overlapping the motifs over the seams deliberately?  Imagine the Olde Grist Mill's river flowing down the wall and into your aquarium -- you can do it!  How about putting a window frame on the wall and creating a scene behind it?   Create your Wee Village or Olde Town the way you think it should look and in what ever way works for you.  Think OUT OF THE BLOCK!

Step Three:  Whether you decide to create a wall hanging and treat it as a "view" with curtains and a false window sash, make lots of small pillows that can be arranged into scenes on beds, day beds or on the floor by wee ones, or whether you choose a more traditional size for a full quilt, the vision is still yours -- no matter how small that corner of the Wee Village is, you may add fluffy flowers, mock leather mushrooms, Wee Folk.  You may bead, braid, button and embroider to your hearts content because it is your imagination and your talent that will make your Wee Village or Olde Towne unique.

Think out of the box!
